Before Season 3 there was no Good Growth channel in the Protein Discord, despite its significance in shaping our Seasons up until this point. For Season 3, we set our sights on “making Good Growth tangible” to support the nascent Impact DAO ecosystem around us, as well as becoming more GGth ourselves. Up until now, we had been playing a supporting function, so we set out to understand how we could be of service.
In addition to exploring and understanding our place within the web3 and impact landscape, we looked at the existing Protein brand and ecosystem. Through this work, we recognized our alignment with Protein Agency and Studios and the potential for fruitful collaboration and integration of the lessons we’ve learned in our web3 Community into the web2 parts of Protein’s ecosystem.
In what was our most challenging Season, most of all, we learned about the intricacies and complexity of growing a community pre-liquidity, during a bear market, with a looming global recession and a pretty tight runway. So, we’ve split this retrospective into two parts,
First, we’ll cover Good Growth - what we did and our conclusions. Secondly, we’ll cover broader happenings and lessons that we’ll look to take into next Season.
DAO operations are a massive experiment. There is no right answer to just one question. Feedback—implementing it, iterating it, and re-implementing it—is the way we choose to lead our onboarding in the Protein Community. We’ve changed the way we give access to members almost every season and this season, we’ve arrived at our “Season Pass” NFTs.
We airdropped these Season Pass NFTs to every new member for full access to the Protein Discord, IRL and URL Events, and more. This article is a case study for other DAOs who are continually experimenting with access and membership models.

This was the first of many roundtables we are hosting to facilitate the conversation about our biggest collective pain points in web3, share some best practices and collaboratively build a more regenerative . Onboarding is a make-or-break moment for any kind of online community experience. DAO onboarding should make the mission of the DAO, the language spoken, and how to contribute super clear and solve some pressing pain points emerging from decentralized coordination. For this purpose, I decided to design an 8-day long cohort-based DAO onboarding which resulted in members starting to contribute from day one.
Our first two seasons have given us an idea of what our building blocks are: a highly capable and creative community that cares about using web3 for good; a global network of experts whose combined force knows no bounds; a forward-looking set of investors who see the opportunity; and a token that powers our internal economy and gives ownership to our members.
It certainly feels like we’re in a highly salty, pressurised, and volatile phase of web3 right now - the perfect time for disparate ingredients to catalyse into life. The key feature in our evolution through bacterial mats, algae, plants, animals, humans, and AI - has been the ability to self-organise and our responsiveness to change. We’ve used our “intermission” to set up these new processes while working collectively to establish the objectives our members can focus on.
This post dives into our evolved approach and refined mission as we cruise through Season 2. But first, here’s a quick round-up of what our community has been up to:

As DAOs begin to mature, strong membership incentives and token utility are key to maintaining community health, thoughtful growth, and reducing contributor churn. These need to start from the second someone discovers your community, continues with every interaction, and are tested every time the token price goes up or down.
These two factors are the main reasons members want to join, and ultimately it’s what keeps them there because if they no longer exist, members will start to drift away from your community onto others.
And it's official, the Protein Community is now in Season 1 and we’re ready to open the doors to new members, onboard partners and launch our first community driven projects! 🌱

It’s been about two weeks since our last update, and since then we’ve launched custom discord bots, kicked off an our first working groups, created a #tough-questions channel and shared pictures of ‘exotic’ snacks as we continue our journey to Season 1.
In our last workshop and article we identified 12 key values across ‘structure, approach and outcome’ which the community are using as a WIP guide for Good Growth.
Following this, we’ve been working through 3 more sessions which are designed to align the community around philosophical, emotional and actionable examples of good growth for Season 1.

Why question Growth?
For many, the Web2 models for growth have become exploitative and extractive, often at the expense of the user or communities who the product claims to represent and serve. While Web3 has the potential to create a fairer and more equitable framework for growth, it’s what we do with it which ultimately dictates the impact it has on society.
So, if Protein Community is a place for people and ideas to grow, it's important to explore the different models of growth which are both positive and negative for society today. And before we can start exploring how Web3 technologies can be used for good growth; we need to explore what good and bad growth means to our community.
We’re Protein, a place where people and ideas grow 🌱
The term growth has become unavoidably toxic in our capitalist world - powered by the extraction and exploitation of people and communities in the name of money. There’s a clear need to shift the systems in power to enable a community-led, rather than corporation-led world. Web3 technologies have opened the doors to a more collaborative, decentralised, and equitable future. With these new tools, an opportunity emerges to reclaim power, redistribute influence, and redefine our relationship with growth - allowing you to own the decisions, actions, and value you create.
For Protein, this means rebuilding our community from the ground up, to create a place that encourages and nurtures this new definition of growth based on mutual collaboration, conversation, and the needs of our members. That’s why today, we’re launching the $PRTN token, a social token that allows holders to gain access, create value, and be in control - whilst also playing a vital and exciting part in the future of decentralised communities and DAOs.
Our 50 or so Founder Members will be the first holders of $PRTN and are already collectively exploring how we can reimagine the concept of growth through new, more mutual, models of conversation and collaboration. Our Pre-Season asks questions like..."As a community, how can we really help people and ideas grow?” and “What can good growth mean to decentralised communities?”
